While visiting the Ottawa office the 13th of September, it was suggested that I visit the National War Museum and have some pictures taken of me beside "My Jeep". Christie Lites had the privilege to install the lighting for the new War Museum and one of the items on display was a vehicle I had traveled in, while serving in the Canadian Military. |

In 1994 I had the honor to serve Canada in a Peace Keeping operation in the Former Yugoslavia. On December 31st, 1994 my friend, Phil Badanai, who was driving, and I were returning from an escort mission in our Iltis "Light Skinned Jeep". Part way through the drive we observed a group of about thirty people on the side of the road, all armed. When we approached they spilled onto the middle of the road in an attempt to stop us. We slowed the vehicle down, and when they thought we were stopping made a break in the crowd. Phil saw this break and gunned the vehicle hoping to make a clean break. Unfortunately, the belligerents realized this and opened fire on us, point blank. The vehicle took over one hundred hits, 54 just to the back! The tires on my side of the vehicle were blown, yet Phil managed to drive the vehicle close to 15 km to the main camp and safety. I was hit 7 times in my upper body, 4 times to my head. Phil was hit 3 times, twice in the back! We recovered from our injuries and were back to work with our battalion at the beginning of 1995. Many years later, after retiring from the Military, I started my tour of duty at Christie Lites. When I found out we were working on the lighting for the museum, I was excited. It gave me an excuse to see our work, and to visit my vehicle. |
